My server lags: low TPS and memory

How to read the health of your server and what to do when it runs short of memory.

Lag has two different causes. When only one player lags, it is usually their connection. When everyone lags at the same time, the server itself is struggling, and the panel tells you why.

Read the health of your server

The Overview shows the memory in use and, for Minecraft, the TPS (ticks per second). A healthy Minecraft server runs at 20 TPS. Below 18, players notice blocks that come back and mobs that jump. Statistics keeps the history, so you can see whether the problem started with a new plugin or with more players.

Memory close to the limit

When memory stays above 90 %, the game spends its time freeing memory instead of running the world.

  • Restart the server once a day from Schedule; long sessions fragment memory.
  • Lower the view distance in Settings. Each step less is a large saving with many players.
  • Remove plugins or mods you no longer use.
  • Pre-generate the world instead of exploring new chunks with many players at once.

If you still reach the limit, your world needs more memory than your plan gives. Compare the plans on the pricing page; the change applies on the next start.

Lag for only one player

  • Ask them to check their ping in the server list.
  • Choose the region closest to most of your players when you create the server; you can move it to another region later.
  • Wi-Fi and mobile data add jitter that a wired connection avoids.

Still lagging

Check the platform status for an incident on the game nodes. If there is none, open a ticket from Support: we attach the latest log of your server automatically.
