Return to Moria is in beta: you can create your server already, but we are still tuning its image and it may change without notice.

Host a Return to Moria server

Return to Moria puts a company of up to eight dwarves inside Khazad-dûm, long after its fall: you dig out ore veins, relight the great forges, brew, cook and hold back orc raids that come up through the dark. Free Range Games ships the dedicated server for Windows; on our nodes it runs inside a compatibility layer with a virtual screen, and Steam brings it up to the newest patch whenever it starts.

Everything the company builds lives in a single save file per world. The server writes that file again whenever it is asked to stop, a few seconds before it exits, and backups copy it together with the list of blocked players.

From an empty panel to the gates of Moria

  1. In the panel, choose Return to Moria and a plan of at least 3 GB.
  2. Leave Campaign selected to follow the story chapters, or switch to Sandbox to mine and build without them.
  3. Story and Solo soften combat, Normal is the intended balance and Hard bites back; set a password too if the hold is private.
  4. Start the server. Expect a few quiet minutes on the first boot while about 4 GB arrive and the mountain is carved out.
  5. When the console shows the line with the invite code, the hold is open: share the code or the address.

Joining from the game

Friends pick Join Other on the title screen. The code tab takes the invite code from the console, D- and twelve letters and digits, and the address tab takes the server address with its port. A password prompt follows when you set one. Because the code is tied to the world, it keeps working after restarts, so pin it in your group chat once.

Rules you can change from the panel

World type and difficulty are read only when the server carves a new world; an existing hold keeps what it was made with, and the Worlds tab is where you start over. The password is read on every start, so a change takes effect after one restart.

How much RAM Return to Moria needs

Idle, with nobody inside, the hold used about 1 GB in our measurements. Each dwarf drags more of the mines into memory as the company spreads out, which is why the floor is 3 GB and we suggest 4 GB for eight players. The 10 GB of disk holds the 4 GB game, the compatibility layer and the saves.

Running the server as the owner

There is no command channel into this server, so the panel console is a window on its log: the invite code, the advertised address and any error. To keep someone out for good, block them from the in-game player list; the server stores them in MoriaServerPermissions.txt and our backups carry that file.

If something goes wrong

An invite code that is refused usually means the hold had not finished opening: wait for the hosting line in the console. Friends who see a version error are on a newer patch than the server, and a restart closes the gap. If the first boot stops early, read the last red line of the console; a full disk during the 4 GB download is the usual cause.
