Killing Floor 2 is in beta: you can create your server already, but we are still tuning its image and it may change without notice.
Host a Killing Floor 2 server
Killing Floor 2 is Tripwire Interactive's co-op shooter: up to six players hold out against waves of Zeds, spend their dosh at the trader between waves and finish against a boss. Your server is Tripwire's own native Linux build, fetched through SteamCMD and patched to the current release on every boot.
The Game tab picks the starting map, the difficulty, the game length, the player limit and a join password. After each match the game moves on through its map cycle, and the configuration lives on the server volume, so it survives restarts and updates.
From an empty panel to the first wave
- Open the panel, pick Killing Floor 2 and a plan with the disk it needs: the install weighs about 30 GB.
- Choose the starting map, the difficulty from Normal to Hell on Earth and the length: 4, 7 or 10 waves.
- Add a join password when the match is meant for your squad alone.
- Hit start and watch the console: the very first boot pulls about 30 GB from Steam, so give it a few minutes; every boot after that is quick.
- In the game, open the console and type open followed by the address shown on your panel.
Joining from the game
Each player presses the backtick key to bring up the in-game console and types open with your server address, or saves the server in Steam favourites and picks it from the server browser. A protected server prompts for its password. Clients that are behind or ahead of the server build cannot connect, so reboot the server once Tripwire ships a patch.
Rules you can change from the panel
Map, difficulty, wave count, player cap and password sit together in the Game tab and take effect when the server reboots. Mutators and custom maps are not offered in this beta.
How much RAM Killing Floor 2 needs
An idle server holds about 450 MB, and a wave full of Zeds with six players adds to it. The server starts at 2 GB, 3 GB leaves room for the bigger waves of Hell on Earth, and the game takes 36 GB of disk because the install with every map weighs about 30 GB.
Running the server as the owner
From the panel console you can talk to everyone with say, kick a player, and kick and ban a player with kickban, without joining the game. The player list of the panel shows who is on the server with their ping.
If something goes wrong
A version mismatch on connect means the server missed a Tripwire patch: reboot it and it fetches the current build. A server missing from the browser can still be joined with open and the address, since the browser only lists servers that reported to Steam a moment ago.
