Soulmask is in beta: you can create your server already, but we are still tuning its image and it may change without notice.
Host a Soulmask server
Soulmask, from the Chinese studio Qooland, drops you into a jungle of ancient ruins wearing a mask that talks back: you recruit tribespeople, teach them trades and grow a settlement that fights rival tribes and the creatures of the wild. The dedicated build here is the native Linux one Qooland publishes on Steam, and each launch asks SteamCMD whether a newer patch is out before the world loads.
Five choices shape the server: the map, PvE or PvP, how many players fit, a join password and the GM password that unlocks moderation in the game. Everything your tribe owns lives in one SQLite database inside WS/Saved; the game writes it every ten minutes, keeps its own rolling copy every fifteen, and writes it once more when the server stops.
Five steps to a running tribe server
- Pick Soulmask in the panel. Only the plans with enough memory are listed, since a freshly generated jungle already sits close to 9 GB.
- Cloud Mist Forest is the jungle every copy of the game includes; Shifting Sands is the desert of the paid DLC, and every visitor must own it.
- Choose PvE if tribes should only fight the wild, PvP if raids between players are part of the deal, and set a join password of four to 32 characters for a private group.
- Press start. The first launch pulls roughly 2 GB from Steam and generates the map, so the log stays busy for a few minutes before the session is announced.
- From the main menu of Soulmask, choose Join Game, type your server name into the search box and give the password when asked.
How friends find the server
The server list inside Soulmask filters by name, so a unique name makes the search instant. Players who prefer not to search can use the invitation code: run qi in the panel console and send them the code it prints. Qooland ships client patches often, and a client and a server on different builds refuse each other; a restart pulls the new server build and ends the mismatch.
What the Game tab controls
Map, PvE or PvP, the player limit from one up to 70 (the slots of your plan still apply), the join password and the GM password reach the game as launch options, so each change waits for the next restart. Experience and harvest multipliers, and mods, stay at Qooland's defaults during this beta.
Memory and disk for Soulmask
We watched an empty Cloud Mist Forest world settle at about 8.7 GB two minutes after launch and stay there, which makes Soulmask one of the heaviest games in the catalogue. Every active tribe, follower and building takes more. 10 GB is the floor, 12 GB is the comfortable size for a group that builds a lot, and 10 GB of disk covers the 2 GB install, the world database and its rolling copies.
Owner tools in the panel console
Five read commands answer straight in the panel console: lp shows who is connected right now, lap every player the world has ever seen, lg the tribes, fps how smoothly the simulation runs and qi the invitation code. Saving needs no command, because the world is written every ten minutes and on every stop. Kicking and banning are GM powers inside the game: open its console, type gm key followed by your GM password, and the GM commands become available to you.
Common problems
Friends who get a version error are running a newer client than your server: restart it and the latest build comes down from Steam. When the name is not in the in-game list yet, give Steam about a minute after the log announces the session, or share the qi code instead. A server that stops during its first launch usually ran short of memory; read the last lines of the console before you try again.
