Host a The Isle server

The Isle is the dinosaur survival game from Afterthought, and Evrima is its rebuilt branch on Unreal Engine 5, still in Early Access on Steam. Every player is a dinosaur that hatches small, grows by eating and drinking, and tries to stay alive on Gateway, the island of the current build. 1up runs the official Linux dedicated server, downloaded from the evrima branch on Steam and brought to the newest build every time the server starts.

Growth, the species each player picked and the bans live in the player database on the server volume, so a herd keeps its adults across restarts and updates. The server starts with human characters off, AI creatures on and no admin at all; you decide who gets the admin tools by adding SteamID64 numbers.

From an empty panel to your first hatchling

  1. Open the panel, pick The Isle and choose a plan with at least the memory the wizard asks for.
  2. Name the server the way players will search for it and set a password if only your group should join.
  3. Paste your own SteamID64 into the admin list in the Game tab if you want the in-game admin tools.
  4. Press start and follow the console: the first boot downloads about 1.5 GB, then Gateway loads in under a minute.
  5. In the game, open the server browser, search for the name of your server and pick a species to hatch.

Joining from the game

Evrima lists servers through Epic Online Services, so the server shows up in the in-game browser by its name a short while after the panel says it is online. A password, if you set one, is asked for when a player joins. Clients and the server must run the same build, so restart the server after a game patch to pull the new one.

Rules you can change from the panel

The Game tab holds the server name, the password, the player limit, human characters, AI creatures, global chat and the admin list. They are written into Game.ini every time the server starts, which also undoes any switch toggled from the console during the last session. Other keys of Game.ini that you edit by hand are kept.

How much RAM The Isle needs

An empty Gateway holds about 1.2 GB, and every player, carcass and AI creature adds to it. The server starts at 4 GB for a small herd, and 8 GB leaves room for a busy map. The install and the player database fit in 10 GB of disk, with room for the next update.

Moderating from the console

The panel console speaks the RCON of Evrima. The player list pairs each name with its SteamID64, which the kick button uses; announce sends a message to everyone, a direct message reaches one player, save writes the player database and wipecorpses clears the carcasses that pile up on a busy server. The RCON never leaves the server: players cannot reach it from outside.

If something goes wrong

If the server does not show up in the browser, give it a minute after the panel says online and check that the game is on the same build; restart the server after a patch. If the console stops right after the start with an Epic Online Services error, the server could not reach the Epic services it needs; start it again in a few minutes. A player who lost a grown dinosaur can be checked with the player data command before you reach for a backup.
