Team Fortress 2 server hosting on the 64-bit dedicated server
Team Fortress 2 is Valve's class-based shooter: nine classes, a red team and a blue team, and maps built around capture points, payload carts and intelligence briefcases. A community server of your own brings back fixed teams, a map rotation you pick and regulars who know each other by name. We run Valve's official dedicated server in its 64-bit build, and it opens on ctf_2fort with 24 slots.
Among the old Source games, Team Fortress 2 is the heavy one: the install weighs around 14 GB and the process asks for close to 800 MB of memory before anybody joins. That is why it runs 24/7 from Casual, with 2 GB of RAM and 20 GB of disk.
How to set up a Team Fortress 2 server
- Pick Team Fortress 2 on the create screen; only plans with at least 2 GB of memory are offered.
- Optionally create a Game Server Login Token for app ID 440 on Steam's game server account page and paste its 32 characters into the token field.
- Choose the first map, for example ctf_2fort, cp_dustbowl or pl_badwater, and a slot count from 2 up to 32.
- Press start. The first boot downloads the whole game from Steam and takes several minutes; later boots only fetch new builds.
- In Team Fortress 2, enable the developer console under Options, Advanced, press the key above Tab and type connect followed by the address and port the panel shows.
Getting your team onto the server
After the first visit, the server appears in the History tab of the community server browser, and one click adds it to Favorites for the whole group. A password from the Game tab keeps strangers out while you organise a scrim; leave it empty to run a public server. Renaming the server applies at once, without a restart.
Map, slots and the Steam token
The Game tab holds the server name, the password, the GSLT, the starting map and the number of slots; everything except the name needs a restart. The token is optional: without it the server logs on to Steam anonymously and still accepts players by address. For any cvar the panel does not expose, the server executes tf/cfg/1up-owner.cfg, a file we create empty once and never overwrite.
Memory and disk for Team Fortress 2
We measured the 64-bit server at about 770 MB of RAM idling on its first map, which makes 2 GB the floor; 4 GB is the relaxed choice for a full rotation with 24 or 32 players. The game files take about 14.5 GB, so each Team Fortress 2 server gets 20 GB, leaving room for logs, updates and your configuration.
Console, kicks and bans
The panel console sends say, kick, kickid with a reason, banid with minutes and a Steam ID, removeid and changelevel, and status lists every player with a user ID. A ban is written to banned_user.cfg right away and loaded again at every start. The Players tab shows each connected Steam profile with hours played and any VAC ban, and the Activity mode of the console counts kills, deaths and chat from the server log.
Votes, sprays and a slow first start
Votes, custom uploads such as sprays, pausing and sv_cheats are off from the start, so nobody can vote-kick the owner or flood the server with files. If your group wants votes or sprays, put sv_allow_votes 1 or sv_allowupload 1 in 1up-owner.cfg and restart. A server that looks stuck on its very first start is usually still downloading: watch the console until the map loads.
