Can I play with tModLoader and mods?

Yes. Pick the tModLoader template when you create the server and upload the mods from the manager. Every player needs the same mod list to join.

Can I upload a world I already started?

Yes. Upload the .wld file from the file manager and mark it as the active world; we keep the previous one in case you want to go back.

How many players does a Terraria server take?

Terraria is comfortable with eight or sixteen players in the same world; the real limit is your plan. Moving up a plan touches neither the world nor the address.

Can I play in Journey or Master mode?

Yes. Mode and difficulty are chosen when the world is created, Journey, Expert and Master included, and so are the size and the seed.

Terraria server hosting with Vanilla or tModLoader

A Terraria server keeps your world running so everyone can dig, build and fight bosses together without waiting for the host. We run the official dedicated server for Vanilla and a separate template for tModLoader, the community mod loader. The world is created with the size, the difficulty and the seed you choose in the wizard, and it is saved on the server instead of on someone's laptop.

Vanilla follows the official 1.4 releases and tModLoader follows its own builds, both listed in the versions panel. Both are light: Terraria is one of the smallest games we host, so a world with a group of friends fits in very little memory, and tModLoader only needs more when your mod list grows. The console gives you the server commands without a client: save, time of day, kick and ban.

Make a Terraria server in five steps

Create your account, press «Create server» and choose Terraria.
Pick Vanilla to play the base game, or tModLoader if your group uses mods.
Choose the world size (small, medium or large), the difficulty (classic, expert, master or journey) and, if you want, a seed.
Set a password if the server is only for your friends, then start it and wait for the world to generate.
In Terraria choose Multiplayer, Join via IP, paste the address and the port from the panel and enter the password.

Playing from PC with friends

PC players on Steam join with Join via IP and the address the panel shows. tModLoader players join from the tModLoader client with the same address, and the server sends them the list of mods it runs so they can download what they miss. Keep the password on if you share the address anywhere public.

World size, difficulty and seed

These three are fixed when the world is generated, so the wizard asks for them first. Journey mode gives the creative tools; master is the hardest. Player slots go up to 255 within your plan, and the password can change at any time from the Game tab with a restart.

How much memory Terraria needs

Vanilla Terraria starts on 1 GB of RAM and rarely needs more for a group of friends. tModLoader asks for more, and big overhaul mods like Calamity raise it again, so 2 GB is the comfortable figure for a modded world. 2 GB of disk holds large worlds and their backups.

Mods, commands and backups

On the tModLoader template the Mods page uploads .tmod files and chooses which ones load at start. The console runs save, dawn, noon, dusk, midnight, playing, kick and ban. Take a backup before a big boss or a mod update; restoring it is one click.

Common connection problems

If Terraria hangs on «Connecting», check the port: it is the one on the panel overview, not the default 7777. A client on a different version than the server is refused, so update both together. tModLoader players need the tModLoader client, not the base game. If the world does not load after a mod change, disable the last mod you added from the Mods page and restart.
