An Icarus dedicated server keeps your outpost on Olympus standing after everyone logs off, so the furnaces, the fields and the ore you hauled home wait for the next drop instead of expiring with a timed mission. This guide covers RocketWerkz' official server, hosting it yourself, its settings file, the Olympus open world, the admin commands, how saving works and the RAM it needs on our [Icarus server hosting](https://1up-servers.com/en/icarus/).

- **What it is:** RocketWerkz' free **Icarus Dedicated Server**, Steam app 2089300, about 10 GB installed. There is a Windows build only.
- **Players:** up to eight prospectors.
- **The world:** Olympus, the open world that never expires, loaded from a prospect file.
- **Joining:** search the dedicated server list by the exact server name.
- **On 1up:** in beta. Free runs it with the hourglass at ×3, and Pro keeps it online 24/7 at €10/month with 8 GB of RAM.

## 1. Self-host or hosting?

The dedicated server is free and installs without owning the game. It is a Windows program, so on Linux it needs Wine, and its console window needs a display, even a virtual one.

1. **Install:** with [SteamCMD](https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SteamCMD), `steamcmd +@sSteamCmdForcePlatformType windows +login anonymous +app_update 2089300 validate +quit`.
2. **Configure:** `Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini` holds `JoinPassword`, `AdminPassword`, `MaxPlayers` from 1 to 8, and the prospect keys `LoadProspect` and `CreateProspect`.
3. **Keep it awake:** set `ShutdownIfNotJoinedFor` and `ShutdownIfEmptyFor` to -1. With their defaults an empty server drops back to the lobby after five minutes and your world is no longer the one players reach.
4. **Start:** run `Icarus/Binaries/Win64/IcarusServer-Win64-Shipping.exe -Log`, with `-PORT=17777`, `-QueryPort=27015` and `-SteamServerName=` your server name.
5. **Ports:** UDP 17777 for the game and UDP 27015 for the Steam query. There is no remote console.
6. **Stop cleanly:** send Ctrl+C to the console window. The server logs the exit request and closes its log in a second or two.

The sharp edge of self-hosting Icarus is the world. A fresh server boots into a lobby and asks the RocketWerkz backend to generate a prospect, and that request is refused while nobody is connected, so the server sits in the lobby forever. Our image writes an Olympus prospect file next to the server before the first start, which the game then loads as a real open world, and that is work you would otherwise do by hand.

## 2. Create an Icarus server on 1up

1. Create an account and press **Create server**.
2. Choose **Icarus** and a region, London or Paris. The wizard measures your ping and suggests the nearest one.
3. Pick a plan. On Free the wizard shows the hourglass before you create the server; Pro and up carry the 6 GB the game needs, 24/7.
4. Choose the difficulty, the number of slots, a join password if the group is private and an admin password for yourself.
5. Create the server and watch the **Console**. The first start downloads about 10 GB and then raises Olympus, so give it several minutes.
6. The world is open when the console reports that the server started empty.

On 1up the Windows server runs under Wine 11 with a virtual display on Linux. You set none of that up, the two ports are published for you, and the server name you typed is the name players search for.

## 3. The settings in the Game tab

| Setting | What it does | Values |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Difficulty | Creature strength and survival pressure | Easy, Medium, Hard or Extreme |
| Slots | How many prospectors can be on the planet | 1 to 8 |
| Join password | Asked before the drop | Empty for an open server |
| Admin password | What `/AdminLogin` takes in the game chat | Empty for no admin |

Difficulty is read once, when the world is built from nothing. After that the prospect keeps it, and the **Worlds** tab is where you wipe Olympus and start over. Slots and both passwords are written into the settings file on every start, so a change applies after one restart.

## 4. How friends join

1. In Icarus, choose **Play**, then **Join**.
2. Open the dedicated servers list and search for the exact server name you chose.
3. Enter the join password if you set one.
4. Drop. Everyone arrives with the character they already own, and the orbital station keeps their talents and blueprints between visits.

The game's direct address box is unreliable with dedicated servers, so searching by name is the route that works. A server missing from the list has usually not finished loading Olympus: wait for the empty-server line in the console and refresh.

## 5. Admin commands and the console

Icarus has no network console at all. On 1up the panel console is a window on the server log: the port it listens on, the map it loaded, the empty-server line and any error.

Admin work happens in the game chat. Type `/AdminLogin` and your admin password, and from then on `/KickPlayer`, `/BanPlayer`, `/UnbanPlayer` and `/AdminSay` work for you until you leave. Bans are kept with the server data and travel in our backups.

## 6. Olympus and how progress is saved

The whole outpost, from the first lean-to to the last electric furnace, lives in one prospect file under `Saved/PlayerData/DedicatedServer/Prospects`, with the characters and the ban list beside it. The server is set to save every five minutes and on exit, and the game also writes when a prospector takes the shuttle back to orbit.

Two details are worth knowing. A server nobody ever joined writes nothing, because there is no progress to keep: the seeded Olympus file is what a restart loads. And a stop while people are building keeps at most the last few minutes, so the kind habit is to leave the planet before the server goes down. Our backups copy the prospect folder, not the 10 GB of game files, so they are small and fast to restore.

## 7. How much RAM, and what it costs

With Olympus loaded and nobody online we measured 3.5 GB, four runs in a row; the same server in the lobby, before the world loads, sits near 1 GB. Every prospector who walks away from the base streams more terrain, creatures and buildings into memory, which is why the floor is 6 GB and we suggest 8 GB for a full group of eight. The 10 GB of game files, the Wine layer and a growing prospect fit in 16 GB of disk.

Real prices, as on [our pricing page](https://1up-servers.com/en/pricing/):

| Plan | Price | RAM | Slots | Backups | Icarus |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Free | €0 | up to 2 GB, Icarus with the hourglass | 4 | none | 1 hour a day, 10 hours a month |
| Pro | €10/month | 8 GB | 30 | 5 | 24/7, a full group of eight |
| Studio | €20/month | 16 GB | 50 | 10 | 24/7, headroom for a long-lived outpost |

Free includes 3 hours of server time a day and 30 hours a month. Icarus asks for far more RAM and disk than Free carries, so the hourglass runs at ×3 and those 3 hours become 1 hour of real play: enough to see Olympus with a friend before you decide. Casual and Starter stop at 2 GB and 4 GB, below the 6 GB the game needs, so the wizard does not offer them for Icarus.

## 8. If something goes wrong

- **The server stays in the lobby:** on 1up it should not, since the world is seeded; if you self-host, your `CreateProspect` request is being refused and a seeded prospect file is the fix.
- **Not in the server list:** wait for the empty-server line in the console, then refresh the list and search by name again.
- **Version warning:** the game patched before the server did. A restart pulls the update.
- **Difficulty did not change:** it only applies to a new world. Wipe Olympus from the Worlds tab and start again.
- **The first start ends early:** read the last red line of the console; a disk that fills during the 10 GB download is the usual cause.
