# Astroneer Dedicated Server: Setup, World Owner and How to Join

Run an Astroneer dedicated server: self-host System Era's server or keep it online 24/7 on 1up, set the world owner, add it in game by IP and port, and keep your saves.

An Astroneer dedicated server keeps your solar system online when the host logs off, so the group can keep printing modules, driving rovers and terraforming on their own schedule. This guide covers System Era's own server, running it on our [Astroneer server hosting](https://1up-servers.com/en/astroneer/), the settings that matter, how friends add it in game and how to look after the save.

- **What it is:** a free tool from System Era (Steam app 728470) that runs the game world without a player, on Windows. Linux hosts run it through Wine.
- **Who can join:** Steam and Epic Games players on PC. The community wiki says self-hosted servers do not take Xbox or Microsoft Store players.
- **Players:** the game is built for up to 8 players on a dedicated server.
- **On 1up:** Astroneer needs 3 GB of RAM. On Free it runs with the hourglass at ×1.5, and 24/7 from Starter. You set the world owner in the panel and friends add the server by IP and port.

## 1. Self-host or hosting?

In normal co-op, the world lives on the host's PC and closes when they quit. A dedicated server is a separate program that holds the world, so nobody has to stay in game for the others.

- **Host from the game:** free, built in, and the world only exists while the host plays.
- **Self-host the dedicated server:** free, but your PC stays on and you open a port on your router.
- **A hosted server:** the world runs in a data centre and you manage it from a web panel.

System Era's [own setup guide](https://blog.astroneer.space/p/astroneer-dedicated-server-details/) starts with a warning: it is "a reasonably complicated process that requires you to make adjustments to your firewall", and System Era offers no support for self-hosted servers. The steps are:

1. Install **ASTRONEER Dedicated Server** from your Steam library's Tools, or with SteamCMD and app ID 728470.
2. Run it once and close it, so it creates `Engine.ini` and `AstroServerSettings.ini` in `Astro/Saved/Config/WindowsServer`.
3. In `Engine.ini`, add a `[URL]` section with `Port=8777` (or another port) and open that port in your firewall.
4. In `AstroServerSettings.ini`, set `PublicIP` to your public address and `OwnerName` to your Steam name, with `OwnerGuid=0`.

The guide is firm about one rule: do not edit the `.ini` files while the server runs, because "changes to the .ini while the server is running will not get saved".

## 2. Create an Astroneer server on 1up

This is the route we built for groups that want the base online 24/7 without a PC left on.

1. Create an account and press **Create server**.
2. Choose **Astroneer**. On Free, the wizard shows the hourglass at ×1.5 before you create it: the server needs more than Free's 2 GB of RAM, so your free time drains one and a half times faster. For a server that never sleeps, pick Starter or above.
3. Pick a region, London or Paris. The wizard measures your ping and suggests the nearest one.
4. Create the server. It installs the latest public build from Steam on every start, so it stays on the same version as your game.
5. When it is online, the **Overview** shows the **IP** line with the address and port your friends need.

We write `PublicIP` and the port for you, so there is no router or firewall to touch.

## 3. The panel settings

Astroneer settings live in the **Game** tab, grouped in four sections. Each one writes a key of `AstroServerSettings.ini`, and the panel shows a preview of the file.

| Setting | Key | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **World owner** | `OwnerName` | The Steam name of the player who gets full rights on the server. |
| **Server password** | `ServerPassword` | Asked when a player joins. 4 to 64 characters, and not part of the server name. |
| **Only listed players** | `DenyUnlistedPlayers` | On, only players already on the server list (whitelisted or admin) can join. Applies at once. |
| **Max players** | `MaximumPlayerCount` | 1 to 8, 8 by default, capped by the player slots of your plan. |
| **Autosave (s)** | `AutoSaveGameInterval` | Seconds between autosaves, 300 to 3600. 900 by default. |
| **Server name** | `ServerName` | The name shown for your server. Empty uses the name of your 1up server. |

Notes from setting it up:

- **Set the world owner first.** System Era's guide explains that the first player who connects with the Steam name written in `OwnerName` becomes the owner. Type it exactly as Steam shows it. If the field is empty, we write a placeholder that nobody can claim, so no stranger takes the server.
- **No more than 8 players.** The game is designed for 8 players on a dedicated server, and the panel does not accept a higher number. Free has 4 slots.
- **Autosave is in seconds.** The game reads `AutoSaveGameInterval` in seconds: the default 900 is 15 minutes.
- **Restart after a change.** Except **Only listed players**, settings apply on the next restart, which also respects the rule about not editing the files while the server runs.

## 4. Invite friends: add the server by IP and port

Astroneer does not find dedicated servers by name. Each player adds the server once and then picks it from a list.

1. Copy the **IP** line from the **Overview**, for example `203.0.113.10:30777`. The port is not 7777 on our nodes, so copy both numbers.
2. In Astroneer, open the server list from the main menu and choose to add a dedicated server, as [Nodecraft's join guide](https://nodecraft.com/support/games/astroneer/how-to-join-your-astroneer-server) shows.
3. Paste the address with its port, give the server a nickname and save it.
4. Select it in the list and join. If you set a password, the game asks for it.

Everyone in the group needs the same game version as the server. Our server installs the newest build on each start, so after a game update, restart it from the panel.

Some hosts that run Astroneer through Wine switch the game's network encryption off and ask every player to add `net.AllowEncryption=False` to their own `Engine.ini`. We do not change that setting, so there is nothing to edit on your PC. If you added that line for another server, remove it before you join ours.

## 5. Manage players from the console

The **Console** tab talks to the server through its own commands. The quick buttons run `DSListPlayers` (who is online), `DSSaveGame` (save now) and `DSServerStatistics` (server status). The command builder adds:

- `DSKickPlayerGuid` to kick a player by the ID shown in the player list.
- `DSSetPlayerCategoryForPlayerName` to mark a player as `Admin`, `Whitelisted`, `Blacklisted` or `Unlisted`. Only the server owner on 1up can run it.
- `DSLoadGame` to load another save by name.

A private group works like this: put everyone in `Whitelisted`, then turn on **Only listed players** in the **Game** tab. New players are turned away until you add them.

## 6. Saves and backups

Astroneer keeps the whole solar system in a `.savegame` file in `Astro/Saved/SaveGames`, which you can see in the **Files** tab. Every planet you visited, base, rover and research item is in that file, so it grows with the world.

- The game autosaves on the interval you chose. Run `DSSaveGame` from the console before you stop the server for a big change.
- A stop from the panel asks the game to save and close, and waits for that save.
- Free has no backups, Starter keeps 3 and Pro keeps 5. Take one before you load another save or try a new setting.

## 7. Limits worth knowing

- **PC only.** The community wiki lists self-hosting for Steam and Epic players, "not Microsoft software and Xbox". PlayStation is mentioned there as well, but we have not seen it work, so plan for PC.
- **No official perks.** System Era's partner servers come with extras that a self-hosted server does not promise. Our server is the same dedicated server you would run at home.
- **Vanilla only.** There is no mod loader in the panel.
- **Not yet tested from a client on our cluster.** Our image starts the server, writes the settings and saves on stop. We will update this guide after a full join test.

For the RAM, Astroneer needs 3 GB to start on 1up and we recommend 6 GB for long saves with big bases. With prices from [our pricing page](https://1up-servers.com/en/pricing/), Starter (€5/month) gives 4 GB of RAM, 20 GB of disk and 10 player slots; Pro (€10/month) gives 8 GB, 60 GB and 30 slots.

If your group also likes relaxed co-op, our guides to a [Core Keeper dedicated server](https://1up-servers.com/en/blog/core-keeper-dedicated-server/) and a [Valheim dedicated server](https://1up-servers.com/en/blog/valheim-dedicated-server/) follow the same steps. If your group likes building on an alien planet, Satisfactory takes it to factory scale: our [Satisfactory server hosting](https://1up-servers.com/en/satisfactory/) runs it 24/7 from Pro.
