An Abiotic Factor dedicated server keeps the GATE Cascade facility open for your team of scientists when the host logs off, so the bases, the crafted gear and the progress through the sectors stay where you left them. This guide covers the official dedicated server, hosting it yourself, the player limit, passwords, admins, how the world is saved and the RAM it needs on our [Abiotic Factor server hosting](https://1up-servers.com/en/abiotic-factor/).

- **What it is:** Deep Field Games' free **Abiotic Factor Dedicated Server**, Steam app 2857200, about 3 GB. There is a Windows build only.
- **Players:** six is what the game is balanced for; the server accepts up to 24.
- **Saving:** the game autosaves about every five minutes.
- **On 1up:** in beta. It needs 2 GB of RAM, so it runs on Free within the daily free time and 24/7 from Casual at €3/month.

## 1. Self-host or hosting?

The dedicated server is free on Steam. It is a Windows program, so on Linux it needs a compatibility layer such as Wine.

1. **Install:** with [SteamCMD](https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SteamCMD), `steamcmd +@sSteamCmdForcePlatformType windows +login anonymous +app_update 2857200 validate +quit`. The forced platform matters on Linux, where SteamCMD would otherwise find no build.
2. **Start:** `AbioticFactor/Binaries/Win64/AbioticFactorServer-Win64-Shipping.exe -log -SteamServerName="Our lab" -MaxServerPlayers=6 -PORT=7777 -QueryPort=27015 -WorldSaveName=Cascade`.
3. **Ports:** UDP 7777 for the game and UDP 27015 for the Steam query.
4. **Passwords:** `-ServerPassword=` for the join password and `-AdminPassword=` for the admin one.
5. **Rules:** difficulty, loot and the other sandbox options live in `SandboxSettings.ini` next to the world save.

At home the server is light on memory, about 1 GB, but the PC has to stay on, the ports have to be open and someone has to restart it after each patch. A hosted server does those three things for you.

## 2. Create an Abiotic Factor server on 1up

1. Create an account and press **Create server**.
2. Choose **Abiotic Factor** and a region, London or Paris. The wizard measures your ping and suggests the nearest one.
3. Pick a plan. Free runs it within the daily free time; Casual and up keep it online 24/7.
4. Set the player limit, a join password if the lab is private, and an admin password for yourself.
5. Create the server and follow the **Console**. The first start downloads about 3 GB, a few minutes; later starts only fetch new patches. The server is ready when the console reports the session created.

On 1up the Windows server runs under Wine 11 on Linux. You do not have to set anything up for that, and you do not see it in the panel.

## 3. The settings in the Game tab

| Setting | What it does | Values |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Max players | How many scientists can be connected | 1 to 24, default 6, capped by the slots of your plan |
| Password | Asked before the facility loads | Up to 32 characters, empty for an open server |
| Admin password | Gives admin tools to the player who types it in the game | Up to 32 characters |

The fields are stored at once and reach the game at the next restart. The sandbox options of `SandboxSettings.ini` and mod.io mods stay at the developer defaults while Abiotic Factor is in beta on 1up. Above six players the game warns those who join that the server is larger than recommended; it still lets them in.

## 4. How friends join

1. In Abiotic Factor, press **Play** and open the server browser.
2. Type part of the server name, pick your server and enter the password if it has one.
3. Or use the short code: the server prints a session short code in the panel console when it starts, and a friend can type it instead of searching.

The password still applies with the short code. When the browser hides your server after a game patch, the server is on the older build: restart it and it downloads the same patch.

## 5. Admins and the console

Abiotic Factor has no remote command line for the usual verbs. Its HTTPS console, which stays inside the server, answers status questions only, so the panel console shows the log, the players online (`1up:players`) and the server status (`1up:status`).

**Admin in the game.** Set an admin password in the Game tab and restart. A player who types it in the game gets the admin tools, including kick and ban.

**Moderators by Steam ID.** The server keeps `Admin.ini` next to the world save. Players listed there by their Steam ID are moderators on every start, and our backups include the file.

## 6. How the facility is saved

The game writes the world on its own timer: the first autosave lands about five minutes after the start, and then roughly every five minutes. No signal makes the server save and exit, so a careless stop can lose up to five minutes of play.

On 1up, a stop after somebody played waits for the next autosave, at most about five minutes, before the server ends; an empty server stops at once. Backups copy `AbioticFactor/Saved/SaveGames`, with the worlds and `Admin.ini`. A crash or an out-of-memory stop can still cost the minutes since the last autosave.

## 7. How much RAM, and what it costs

We measured about 1 GB with the facility loaded and nobody inside, flat after three minutes. Every scientist, base and portal world adds to it, so the server starts at 2 GB and 3 GB is what we suggest for a full team of six. The 3 GB game files, the Wine layer and the saves fit in 8 GB of disk.

Real prices, as on [our pricing page](https://1up-servers.com/en/pricing/):

| Plan | Price | RAM | Slots | Backups | Abiotic Factor |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Free | €0 | 2 GB | 4 | none | 3 hours a day, 30 hours a month |
| Casual | €3/month | 2 GB | 6 | 1 | 24/7, a team of six |
| Starter | €5/month | 4 GB | 10 | 3 | 24/7, room for the recommended 3 GB and more players |

Abiotic Factor fits Free's RAM, so the hourglass stays at ×1 and the 3 hours of free server time a day are 3 hours of real play. Free has 4 slots, enough to try the facility with a small team.

## 8. If something goes wrong

- **Version mismatch:** the clients are newer than the server; one restart brings it level.
- **The server is not in the browser:** Steam can take a minute to list a new server. Use the short code from the console meanwhile.
- **The server never reaches online:** read the last red line of the console; a full disk during the 3 GB download is the usual cause.
- **Progress lost after a crash:** the game only keeps what its last autosave wrote, at most five minutes old.
