Running your own server means you decide the rules: how hard the wild dinosaurs hit, which map you play and who gets in. 1up runs the official Linux dedicated server from Studio Wildcard, downloaded from Steam and brought to the newest build every time the server starts. Every map that ships with the dedicated server is on the menu, from The Island where most players begin to the frozen coasts of Fjordur. The world lives on its own volume, so taming progress, mutation lines and every foundation your tribe placed survive restarts and updates. A web console sends the classic ARK admin commands without opening the game, and an admin list of Steam IDs lets trusted players use cheats without sharing a password. ### From an empty panel to your first tame 1. Open the panel, pick ARK: Survival Evolved and choose a plan with at least the memory the wizard asks for. 2. Pick a map. The Island is the classic start; Ragnarok, Valguero and Fjordur are larger and free for every player. 3. Set a join password if only your friends should get in. 4. Press start and follow the console: the first boot downloads a little over 20 GB, then the map loads in under two minutes. 5. In the game, open Join ARK, switch the session filter to Unofficial and search for the name of your server. ### Joining from the game The in-game browser hides player-hosted servers until you switch the filter to Unofficial; if the list stays empty, tick Show Player Servers and search for the exact server name. In Steam (View > Game Servers > Favourites > Add a server), type the Steam favourites address shown on the Server tab, not the join address: ARK: Survival Evolved answers Steam queries on another port. To join without the browser, open the game console and type open followed by the address on the panel. Players need the Steam edition of ARK: Survival Evolved on the same build as the server. ### Rules you can change from the panel The difficulty slider sets the DifficultyOffset of the game, which caps the level of wild creatures. The panel also sets the number of slots up to 70, the join password and a message of the day shown to everyone who connects. Rule changes take effect at the next restart; the message of the day changes at once. ### How much RAM ARK needs The Linux server holds close to 6 GB on an empty Island, so it starts at 8 GB; a busy tribe with large breeding pens is more comfortable on 16 GB. The download plus the saves fit in 40 GB of disk, which also leaves room for the next update. ### Running the server as an admin From the web console you can broadcast messages, list who is online, save the world on demand and kick or ban by Steam ID. For powers inside the game, add your Steam ID to the admin list in the Players tab, or type EnableCheats with the admin password in the game console. Destructive commands such as DestroyWildDinos ask for confirmation before they run. ### If something goes wrong A server missing from the list is usually still registering with Steam, or the filter is not set to Unofficial. If players see a version mismatch after a patch, restart the server so it pulls the new build. A player who cannot enter a DLC map such as Aberration or Genesis needs to own that DLC.
